CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Nicole

Silas didn’t call me at all this week. I am surprised considering how excessively he prefers to call me any other time. I’m thankful that he is giving me my space to figure things out, but I also find myself wondering how he is doing. Brody looked extremely uneasy in the car when he was taking me home and that alone makes me tense.

It did, however, give me a chance to spend some time with Joey without the added guilt of worrying about how Silas would feel about it. I still haven’t told him that me and Silas are taking a break, and I’m not sure when I will. If I’m being honest, it would be because I’m afraid. I’m afraid of what that would truly mean for us, what we could be if given the chance.

I’m made aware of the fact that I’ve been washing the same bar glass for the past ten minutes when Chloe shoots me a look.

“What’s up with you?” she asks.

I shrug. “Nothing, why?”

“You’re acting super weird. And not to mention the fact that a certain someone hasn’t been in here for any of your shifts this week,” Chloe points out, handing me a new glass to clean.

I take it from her and try to keep my features even. It’s a well-known fact that I typically don’t like to talk about my innermost feelings, and that most definitely includes in the workplace. “He’s busy. I’m sure he’ll stop in later.”

She can clearly see right through my bullshit but she doesn’t call me out on it. “Okay. But if you need to talk, I’m here. I recently went through a shitty break up so I might know what you’re going through,” she adds, readjusting her multi-colored pony tail.

Is it wrong that I didn’t even know she had a boyfriend? We’ve worked together side by side for the past three years and I’m apparently so self-involved that I didn’t even notice she went through a break up, let alone an entire relationship.

I finally make it through all the glassware when the sight of a familiar face causes me to smile. “Ryder! How are you?” I say in greeting, stretching across the bar to hug him.

“Hey sweetheart, it’s been a long time,” Ryder replies in his signature raspy voice.

Ryder Quinn has been a long-time friend of mine. Our families run in the same social circle so we basically grew up together. He’s been close friends with Silas and Brody for as long as I can remember. Over the summer, when I had a lot more time on my hands, we went to all of the almost nightly parties he threw at his lake house. It was at one his parties that Silas and I met.

“How you been doing?” he asks, lighting a cigarette out the corner of his mouth.

“Good,” I answer automatically.

He raises an eyebrow. “Is that so? Well, it just so happens that I hung out with Silas the other night and for some reason I don’t believe you.
